Frisch von der Frankfurter Musikmesse liegt uns jetzt die 5. CD der bekannten T.R.A.X.-Serie aus dem Hause MASTERBITS vor. Die Libraries dieser Serie sind jeweils als sogenannte Production-Tools konzipiert und beinhalten dementsprechend alle Elemente, die zur Produktion eines kompletten Songs nötig sind, angefangen von Drum-Grooves & -Samples über Bass- und diverse Keyboard-Sounds bis hin zu Gesangsphrasen. Nach Dance, Tekkno und Rave widmet sich das Volume 5 ausschließlich dem Thema House.

Die Basis bilden über 260 abwechslungsreiche und hervorragend produzierte Drum- und Percussion-Pattern, die säuberlich sortiert in den house-typischen Tempi 120, 125 und 130 bpm gruppiert sind. Diese Songbausteine lassen sich untereinander problemlos kombinieren und bei Bedarf mit den im Anschluß folgenden Drum- und Percussion-Einzelsamples weiter ausbauen. Für den richtigen Groove ist somit bestens vorgesorgt. Unter der Rubrik "Selected House-Samples" folgen neben einigen Bässen die unverzichtbaren Multisamples klassischer House-Keyboard-Sounds wie House-Pianos & -Organs, aber ebenso auch eher ungewöhnliche Klänge wie die 20 Talkbox-Sounds. Die nächsten 14 Tracks beinhalten sehr gelungene Vocal-Phrasen ausschließlich mit Vertretern der weiblichen Gattung und teilweise mit souligem Touch. Den meines Erachtens krönenden Abschluß bilden die rund 400 Einzelsamples, die hier in der Kategorie "typical Housestuff" zusammengefaßt sind. Beim ersten Durchhören dieser zum Teil recht kurzen Chords, Sound-Effects und sonstigen One-Shots mag man deren Sinn vielleicht noch nicht so ganz erkennen, im Arrangement eingebettet und in den housetypischen Notenfolgen angetriggert erweist sich speziell dieser Bereich als eine wahre Goldgrube für alle House-Musik-Produzenten.

Wer einen Internetzugang hat, kann sich das ganze auch selbst anhören. Masterbits hat auf ihrer umfangreichen Website sogenannte „Active Tracklistings" eingeführt. Hier können Sie sich quasi eine Kopie des Booklets auf den Bildschirm laden und die einzelnen Tracks vorspielen lassen. Dank des Einsatzes neuester MPEG3-Technologie sind die Soundfiles um den Faktor 48 komprimiert. Die daraus resultierenden MP3-Files sind somit angenehm klein. Um die Sounds und Loops zu beurteilen, reicht die über das Internet gebotene Klangqualität allemal aus. Somit braucht niemand mehr die Katze im Sack kaufen - sondern kann die komplette Library vom heimischen PC aus prüfen - eine tolle Sache von Masterbits.

Die House-Trax ist eine gelungene Basis-Library für diese Musikrichtung, die Einsteigern schnell professionelle Ergebnisse ermöglicht und Profis widerum hilft, eine Menge Zeit zu sparen. Gattungsspezifisch darf man hier keine spektakulären Sounds erwarten, sondern eben typische House-Sounds. Es würde mich nicht wundern, Teile dieser Library bald im Radio wieder zu hören. Eines ist jedoch Gewiß, diese CD ist preiswerter als vergleichbare Libraries.

Alles, (na ja fast) für die nächste House-Produktion finden Samplewütige auf "HOUSE TRAX", ebenfalls aus dem Hause Masterbits. Drumloops (über 260), typische House-Instrumente wie Orgeln, Pianos und Bässe, die obligatorischen Vocals sowie Effekte und Akkorde machen aus dieser Audio CD einen recht vollständigen Baukasten für den ambitionierten (oder programmierfaulen ...) Hausmusikanten. Da "HOUSE TRAX" zum gewohnt günstigen Kurs erhältlich ist, kann man eigentlich zum Kauf nur wärmstens raten. Also, ich hab für deutlich mehr Geld schon deutlisch schlechtere Sample-CDs gekauft.

Dance aficionados the world over shake their bodies to the pumping, pulsing house groove, and there are many sample discs that focus on this genre. Masterbits, a company that is located in Germany (birthplace of house), has produced a number of quality dance-oriented CDs, and House Trax (audio CD $69; WAV file CD $39; Akai CD-ROM $129 available soon [QQQ by February?]) is its latest addition.

A Look at the Loops There's a strong emphasis here on drum and percussion loops, for obvious reasons - just try dancing without them. There are 267 house drum loops here to draw from, so you're sure to find plenty to suit your taste. This form of "Euro-House" is a descendant of disco, so there are similarities in the drum patterns: swishing hi-hats, upbeat tempos, and bouncy rhythms. The loops, each two bars in length, are all 120, 125, or 130 bpm and thus fall into a certain danceable "pocket". Many of the loops are rhythmically similar, but there is a lot of tonal variety, as the kits are equalized quite extensively. Most are very processed, electronic-sounding kits with sundry percussion thrown in-conga being the most common-created on an Akai S3000 with some sounds from the Masterbits library and some the producers' own.

The Rest of the Story The remainder of the disc consists of one-shot samples. The CD flies through 129 drum samples, providing you with a spectrum of colors for drum kits. Kicks, claps, snares, rides, and toms give you the fundamental drum sounds; shakers, congas, fingersnaps, and mixed percussion are available to dress them with. The Selected House Samples cover many of the bases that you hear in house music. They start with a smattering of analog and FM-type synth basses. Each is sampled at one note only (a low C), which gives you about two usable octaves-not an abundance, but an acceptable range for this type of music. Following the basses are a few pianos, organs, and string patches. These are given in tritone steps through a five-octave range. The pianos tend toward the synthy Wurlitzer style that often accompanies house. The organs have a nice grit and bite to them, which works well for this style. Some of the strings fall into a 70s string-machine vibe, some sound like quirky early-80s analog, and others sound FM based; but all are, again, synthy-sounding patches. Twenty talkbox samples end this section for true house flavor. The last two categories are Female House Vocals and Typical Housestuff. Many of the samples from the four vocalists are belting R&B/soul slices that lean toward the "touch me, oh yeah" lyrical bent, with some nice harmonized bits thrown in. Housestuff is overflowing with 399 single samples that race by even more quickly than the drum samples. These are wavering pads, washes, and other synth chunks that serve as ornaments to your tracks.

House Trax is a solid offering that works well for the specific musical style at which it's aimed. As is my usual reproach, I wasn't happy with the documentation: there is no indexing of individual tracks, and keys aren't provided for the vocal samples or the Typical HouseStuff. Every sampling musician needs a large pool of colors to dip into, and House Trax can add workable, if not terribly unique or exciting, choices to any collection. If house is your thing, these Trax will find a happy home in your sampler.
