Not a loops disc, not a licks disc, FX-Zone is all about synth textures and effects: sweeping, swelling, swirling ambiences that sound like something from Alien. And we´re not just talking about quick hits. Many of the sounds are thick, rich, slow pads - musical syrup, if you will.
The disc is sectioned into three categories: RSSFX, Q Sound FX, an First Base FX. It´s a mixed bag throughout, but the consistent element is weirdness. "Practically all of the sounds include active stereo panning," notes Jim. "One of my favorits is "Space Highway", because the panning is unexpectedly fast, rather than dreamy. And the hollow resonance of the first long sample in "Sweeps 4" gave me chills." A Masterbits spokesperson tells us that the sound generators used to make the disc ranged from "old analogue modular synths to physical modeling, and tons of effects processors - incuding 3 D systems", hence the category headings.
I´ve used FX Zone extensively in my recent projets - including the remake of "Human". Two FX Zone creations can be heard in that one. The first, used in the B section, is a layer of swooping stereo noises. Five sounds were each given an octave on the sampler, and then "played" in real time. The grand finale was a slow upward pitch-bend at the end. The second effect is a slow bubbling pad, which was sampled in its entirety and layered into the spoken section. Negatives" "Many of the sounds decay naturally," Jim reports, "but some are chopped off too abruptly." The only other item that raised my eyebrows was the bare-bones documentation. No mention is made of key signatures or empos. Granted, not much of this material relates to a key or tempo, but some does - and it would be useful info to have up front. We hope all sound developers will meticulously document their material, whenever applicable.
FX Zone is not for everyone. It´s a specialty product, and far from your meat-and-potatoes sampling CD. But when it comes to big, rich sci-fi sweeps and swells, this disc is a musthave. "It´s a fine example of creative sound design," concludes Jim. "I´m not sure what I´d use some of the samples for, but they´re bound to inspire something wonderful."

Das Kürzel "FX" steht im Hollywood-Jargon für Sound-Effekte und die gibt es hier satt - konkret 264 auf der Audio-CD und 304 auf der CD-ROM-Version. Da diese Library ausschließlich Klangmaterial außerhalb normaler Hörgewohnheiten liefert, läßt sie sich keiner gängigen Schublade zuordnen und ist ohnehin verbal nur annähernd zu beschreiben. Vom Klangcharacter kann man dieses Sample-Angebot, das von kurzen Sound-Effekten über längere Pad-Textures bis hin zu kurzen Soundtracks bis zu 30 Sek. Länge reicht, am ehesten mit modern, futuristisch und mystisch beschreiben. Um sich selbst einen akustischen Eindruck dieser einzigartigen Klängen zu ermöglichen, empfehlen wir Ihnen den Download einiger Probesamples von der Masterbits-Homepage im Internet.
Ein Blick in die Dokumentation, die m. E. ruhig ein wenig umfangreicher hätte ausfallen können, konfrontiert den Anwender mit vielversprechenden Namen wie "Dreamscape", "Metal Rain", "Kryptonite" und der anschließende Druck auf die Play-Taste enttäuscht keinesfalls. Was hier an die Ohren gelangt, klingt bombastisch und teuer und erinnert stark an klanggewaltige Soundtracks wie wir sie von aktuellen Kino-Hits her kennen. Hier zischt´s, scheppert´s, schwebt´s im Sekundentakt. Die Sound-Tüfftler unter Ihnen werden sich beim durchsteppen dieser außergewöhnlichen Aufnahmen sicherlich sehr bald die Frage stellen, wie derartig atemberaubende Aufnahmen produziert wurden. Nach Angaben des Herstellers wurde hier alles was Rang und Namen hat an Klangerzeugern eingesetzt, angefangen von riesigen Modular-Sauriern bis hin zu neuester "Physical modeling"-Technologie, während andere Klänge "gerechnet" wurden. Der Clou liegt aber in der aufwendigen Nachbearbeitung der Sounds mit den "state of the art" - Effekt-Geräten. Hier kamen u. a. der First B.a.s.e.-Prozessor zur Stereo-Verbreiterung zum Einsatz sowie das kanadische Q-Sound-Verfahren zur Plazierung von Klangereignissen außerhalb des Stereo-Dreiecks. Für Klangschöpfungen, die sich mit dynamischem Verlauf frei im 3-dimensionalen Raum bewegen, wurde das RSS-10-System aus dem Hause Roland eingesetzt. Dementsprechend bieten diese 3-D-Aufnahmen schon auf einer gewöhnlichen Stereo-Abhöre außergewöhnliches Klang-Kino pur und unter Verwendung eines Dolby Surround Decoders wird dieser Effekt zum "echten mittendrin" gesteigert.
Bei all dem Klangvergnügen stellt sich die Frage nach den Einsatzmöglichkeiten dieser Klangsammlung. Für eine traditionelle Rock- und Pop-Nummer ist das vorliegende Klangmaterial ein wenig zu hyper - jedoch im Bereich Dance, Trance, Ambient und Tekkno lassen sich diese Effekte und Textures schnell z. B. für ein hochwertiges Intro einsetzen. Für alle diejenigen, die mit der Vertonung von Video-Clips, Werbefilmen und Computerspielen zu tun haben, ist diese CD unverzichtbar. Auch als Background für eine Präsentation oder eine Laser-/Lightshow kann diese Library gute Dienste leisten. Die FX-Zone ist eine sehr außergewöhnliche CD für spezielle Anwendungen und eine wahre Fundgrube an inspirierenden Klängen zu einem sensationell günstigen Preis.
